Composition – Rule of Thirds

The Rule of Thirds is a way to compose visually appealing videos, paintings and most importantly, for me at least, photos!

You can find lots of great information on the internet about using this rule to enhance your photos. For landscape photography generally stated, the horizon should be on the top third or bottom third of your photo. I follow the rule most of the time.

Here are a couple of photos to illustrate. These are taken on a freighter journey through the fjords of Chile.

Yes, Chile has fjords in the Patagonia region!

This photo creates interest because the water line is on the bottom third of the photo and the sun is hitting a snow covered peak on the top third.

As the saying goes, rules are meant to be broken….

This image has the horizon smack in the middle, against the rule. It still works, at least for me, since it creates a mirrored image top to bottom.

Have fun, use the rule of thirds or just break the rule 🙂
